I love reading your articles. It occurred to me when you wrote about Rowan that becoming trans is such a great way to become dissociative if you have a troublesome family. Then it’s not you feeling anything, it’s the other guy (no pun intended). We used to just have cigarettes, alcohol and pot, then razors, and now have “identity” transformations.
Thank you so much AL, that makes my day. ☺️ 100 percent regarding Rowan. She's also a cutter. Encompassing the whole mess, is one of my favorite phrases pertaining to these girls and their enabling moms: maladaptive coping mechanism. That right there gives me hope and confidence that my kid won't fall prey. She's too darn stable, and so are her parents despite our turmoil these past few years. Rowan's dad is a raging alcoholic, his mom is schizophrenic and the mother clearly has munchausen's. Their circus will hopefully reveal the trans dead end to Miss Miller. One day....
I think you isolated the key component--providing stability (every family has problems, drama, etc. but that's part of life), love and affection no matter what, (and can I just tell you that trying to give my 14 year old a hug only see him visibly cringe and roll his eyes was possibly my most depressing parenting moment to date) and straightforward, honest communication, and truly being there for them--parenting daily, seems to make all the difference. If we can get them through--then it seems likely this trans stuff will be left in the dust by the time they're in their 20s. I'm sad for Rowan. Unlike the rebellion moves of the 80s and 90s, this stuff can't be well reversed.
Please tell me you are working on a fictionalized version of your experiences and everything you have witnessed as an ROGD mom. When the tide turns (and it will) Hollywood will be clamoring for a 'Dopesick' type miniseries that chronicles the lives of the parents and daughters affected by this madness. YOU are the person to write this!
Aww Gary thank you. 😊 I have written a bit of fiction on the subject. I'd send it to the daily wire in a heartbeat since mainstream agents won't touch it for a while. Double feature with Lady Ballers!

Always rooting for you and Miss Miller.

Ah, Rowan is my daughter’s new trans name. I think what I love most about it is how original it is 🤮
They're all so bad.
Jeez... sounds so hard... hang in there
