Isn't it sad that Greta is the Avatar of our Age. An uneducated autistic teenager caught up in so many of the -isms, consumed by anger, fear and frustration.

I love this! And replacing vegan for trans when reading the list made my stomach drop -the exact same formula.

Saturday nights when I was in high school I used to fill a cookie sheet with chicken nuggets and curly fries. Then I would put the chicken nuggets in hot dog buns with mayo and lettuce. Then I’d watch the nbc lineup of Gimme a Break, Facts of Life, Golden Girls, and Empty Nest. #noregrets

Another banger of an essay Mrs. M. You’re so right. I was just thinking about the misleading & culty nature of veganism this morning when I saw a headline to the effect of “save the planet by giving up one hamburger a week!”

First, who eats MORE than one burger a week? Also, do Do you know how much water & energy it take to grow soybeans & other stuff that has to be further processed, manufactured into something resembling food, packaged up, & shipped to you so you can feel virtuous eating your dustburger? Look into it. I’m not sure the vegan way balances out at all, let alone the risk of malnutrition from orthorexia/disordered eating.

I still think Michael Pollan’s notion of not eating anything your great-grandmother wouldn’t have eaten is good advice. Avoid ALL the fake foods, from Doritos to Morning Star soystuff.

Are you suggesting that if John Lennon ate meat he would’ve had the strength to dodge the bullet? 🤔

I went vegan waaaaaay back in 1998 after reading a book by Marilu Henner, LOL. I loved TAXI so I guess my cult of choice is classic TV sitcoms. Anyway, It was a difficult diet to maintain back in those days. The only 'replacement' options at the grocery store were soy-based (and also, I was just not very adventurous or creative in the kitchen). I ate SO MUCH SOY for SO MANY YEARS that it really did a number on my system. NOT healthy at all. I eventually went to a more 'flexitarian' diet and then reintroduced dairy and poultry. I can't believe I went so many years without eating ice cream. What an idiot!!! Ha ha. I still don't eat pigs or cows because I just don't crave it...your writing lately has me wondering if I should try a pork chop or steak again....hmmmm.....

And oh, yes, the parallels you describe are there! Why do humans always go to extremes? Is it the desire to be part of a 'community'? Or a desire to find The Answer?

May I quote that sage Ferris Bueller?

“Not that I condone fascism, or any -ism for that matter. -Ism's in my opinion are not good. A person should not believe in an -ism, he should believe in himself. I quote John Lennon, 'I don't believe in Beatles, I just believe in me.' Good point there. After all, he was the walrus. I could be the walrus. I'd still have to bum rides off people.”
